    Hybrid Flooring

The floor built for every room, every family, and every lifestyle. Waterproof. Scratch-resistant. Warm underfoot. And designed to actually look good.

You Know the Rooms You're Worried About.
Hybrid Flooring Is Built to Handle Them.

Most people researching hybrid flooring already have a specific room in mind — the kitchen, the bathroom, the living area with the dog. That's the right starting point.

What they often don't realise is how much variation exists underneath the marketing. Two floors both described as "100% waterproof SPC hybrid" can perform very differently over a decade. Core thickness, wear layer gauge, underlay density, and surface finish all determine how a floor feels, sounds, and holds up to the way you actually live.

"Our role is to match those factors to your home, your lifestyle, and your budget — before you commit to anything. Hybrid is a category, not a product. Getting the right specification is what separates a floor you'll love in ten years from one you'll be replacing in five."

The Three Things That Shape Every Hybrid Floor Decision

Before we talk brands or colours, three things need to line up: Core Construction, Wear Layer, and Surface Finish. Get those right, and everything else follows.

    1

Core Construction — What's Actually Under Your Feet

The core is the foundation of a hybrid floor and the single biggest factor separating quality products from budget ones.

    Industry Standard

    SPC — Stone Polymer Composite

Quality hybrid flooring sold in Australia uses an SPC core — a dense, rigid composite of limestone powder and thermoplastic polymer. The core is what makes the floor genuinely waterproof and dimensionally stable. A thicker core (6–8mm+) is more resistant to temperature movement, which matters in sun-exposed rooms and throughout Melbourne's seasonal temperature swings. SPC is the spec you should be asking about.

    Watch Out For

    LVP — Luxury Vinyl Plank

Some budget hybrid products use a softer, more flexible LVP core. These are often sold alongside SPC products but don't perform the same way under heavy furniture, in high-traffic areas, or in rooms with strong direct sunlight. They can telegraph subfloor imperfections and dent under point loads. If a product doesn't specify SPC, ask what the core is made of.

    Pre-Attached Acoustic Underlay

One of the most underrated features of quality hybrid flooring. A well-bonded acoustic underlayment significantly reduces impact noise — footsteps on an upper floor, chairs moving, dogs running. The difference between 1.5mm and 3mm underlay is noticeable underfoot and through the ceiling below. Always ask about underlay thickness, not just total floor thickness.

    2

Wear Layer — What Determines How Long It Lasts

The wear layer is the clear protective coating over the decorative surface. It's measured in mil (thousandths of an inch) or mm, and is the single most important factor for long-term durability. This is the first question to ask when comparing products at a similar price point.

    6 mil
    0.15mm — Entry Level

Fine for low-traffic areas, investment properties, or short tenancy cycles. Not the spec for a family home.

    Popular
    12 mil
    0.3mm — Residential

The standard spec for busy family homes. Suitable for all rooms including kitchens, hallways, and living areas.

    Premium
    20 mil
    0.5mm — Heavy Resi

For homeowners who want genuine longevity. Available in top collections from Heartridge and Terra Mater.

    28–40 mil
    Heavy Commercial

Rarely needed in residential settings. Specified for retail, hospitality, and commercial tenancies.

    3

Surface Finish — How It Looks and Feels Underfoot

Modern hybrid collections have closed the gap on real timber and stone significantly. The finish affects both aesthetics and daily practicality — here's how to think about it.

    Most Popular

    Matte / Satin

The go-to finish for residential use. Hides micro-scratches and daily wear far better than gloss. Easy to maintain. Looks natural even in strong light.

    Wire-Brushed Texture

Adds a tactile, natural timber feel underfoot. The surface variation disguises minor surface marks and is ideal for timber-look collections where authenticity is the priority.

    High Gloss

Striking in formal spaces. Shows footprints, dust, and every micro-scratch. Usually reserved for stone-look collections or formal living and dining areas with lower foot traffic.

    Embossed In Register (EIR)

The most realistic finish available. The surface texture is perfectly aligned with the printed timber grain or stone veining, creating a three-dimensional effect that reads as the real thing.

How Hybrid Compares to Your Other Options

Most people shortlisting hybrid are also considering timber, vinyl, or laminate. Here's an honest comparison to help you choose the right product for your specific situation.

    Hybrid Flooring by Room

One of hybrid's biggest advantages is its versatility. Unlike timber, it doesn't need different products for different rooms. A single well specified floor can run through your entire home without a transition strip in sight.

    Kitchen

    ✓ Ideal
Fully waterproof, easy to clean, and comfortable underfoot during long cooking sessions. SPC's rigid core handles the weight of appliances and island stools without denting.

    Bathroom

✓ Yes — with the right spec
Hybrid handles bathrooms well, but the wet area waterproof warranty must specifically cover bathrooms. Silicone sealing at the perimeter and around any penetrations is essential, and part of our standard install.

    Laundry

    ✓ Excellent
One of the best rooms for hybrid. Handles water, appliance weight, and harsh cleaning products. The floating install makes future appliance access straightforward.

    Living & Dining

    ✓ Strong performer
High wear layer spec is important here. For double storey homes, acoustic underlay quality makes a noticeable difference in impact sound transmission to the room below.

    Bedrooms

    ✓ Excellent
Warm underfoot, quiet, and easier on joints than hard timber or tile. The acoustic underlay really shows its value here and makes the room feel noticeably different from budget options.

    Whole Home Install

    ★ Where hybrid excels
Hybrid's click-lock floating system makes it the best product for continuous flow through every room. One floor, no transitions at doorways, consistent look throughout. A genuine whole home solution.

    How Hybrid Flooring Is Installed

Hybrid flooring installs as a floating floor over virtually any existing surface. From concrete slab, tiles, existing timber, and sheet flooring, provided the subfloor is flat within 3mm over 1.8 metres. Most rooms are done in a day.

    1

    Subfloor Assessment

We assess the subfloor for levelness, moisture, and surface condition. Most substrates are suitable; some may need minor levelling prior to install. We'll tell you exactly what's needed before any work begins.

    2

    Acclimatisation

While SPC hybrid is dimensionally more stable than timber, we recommend leaving planks in the room for 24–48 hours where there are significant temperature differentials , particularly in south facing rooms in winter.

    3

    Click-Lock Floating Installation

Boards click together without adhesive. The pre-attached underlay goes down with the floor. The expansion gap at the perimeter is critical. Hybrid needs room to move with temperature, and we don't skip it.

    4

    Finishing & Trim

Scotia or flush skirting is fitted around the perimeter to cover the expansion gap. Transitions and thresholds are installed where the hybrid meets adjacent floor types, and done neatly, every time.
