    Cork Flooring

    A Floor That Works Differently

Cork is not an imitation of another material. It is a genuine natural surface with properties that timber, hybrid, and vinyl simply cannot replicate. It absorbs impact, insulates against temperature, and dampens sound, all while remaining highly durable.

At Domain Flooring in Carnegie, we supply and install premium tiles from Portugal Cork Co. We focus on this single brand because their commitment to quality, high density formats, and authentic sustainability is unmatched in the Australian market.

    The Science of Cork

The performance of cork flooring comes down to its cellular structure. Every cubic centimetre of cork contains roughly 40 million hexagonal air cells. This trapped air gives the material its unique properties.

    Thermal Insulation

The trapped air acts as a natural thermal barrier. Cork floors remain warm to the touch in winter and cool in summer, significantly reducing energy costs.

    Acoustic Dampening

Those same air cells break up sound waves. Cork reduces impact noise (footsteps) and airborne noise, making it ideal for apartments and upper floors.

    Suberin and Health

Cork naturally contains suberin, a waxy substance that repels moisture, insects, and mould. It is naturally antimicrobial and hypoallergenic.

    Genuinely Carbon Positive

Many flooring products claim to be sustainable. Cork actually is. It is one of the few materials where the extraction process actively benefits the environment.

    9
    Year Cycle

The bark of the cork oak tree is harvested by hand every nine years without cutting down or harming the tree.

    200
    Year Lifespan

A single cork oak tree can live for over 200 years, providing multiple harvests across generations.

    5x
    Carbon Absorption

A harvested cork oak tree absorbs up to five times more carbon dioxide during bark regeneration than an unharvested tree.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the 8mm high density matter?

Standard cork tiles are usually 5mm or 6mm thick. The 8mm high density tiles (Charcoal and Traditional) contain more cork material compressed into a tighter structure. This makes them significantly more resistant to impact, indentation, and heavy foot traffic, making them the correct specification for commercial use or busy residential hallways.

    How is cork flooring installed?

Portugal Cork Co tiles are a direct stick product. They must be glued directly to a properly prepared, level subfloor. They are not a floating floor. We handle the complete preparation and installation process.

How do I maintain a cork floor?

Maintenance is straightforward. Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove abrasive dirt. Clean with a well-wrung damp mop using a pH-neutral cleaner. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive scrubbers, and excessive water. Like timber, cork will fade slightly if exposed to intense direct sunlight, so use blinds or UV window films where necessary.

Can cork be used in wet areas?

While cork is naturally moisture resistant (thanks to suberin), cork tiles are not recommended for bathrooms or shower areas where standing water is common. They are, however, excellent in kitchens and laundries when properly sealed during installation.

Is the Champagne tile really made from wine corks?

Yes. The Champagne tile is manufactured using recycled wine and champagne stoppers. It is a genuine closed-loop recycling product that diverts material from landfill while creating a highly textured, unique flooring surface.
